Can this scooter really be used off-road?

For everyday use, this storage capacity is a game-changer. Imagine: you go grocery shopping, you don't need to drag a bag on your back, you put everything in the central compartment and ride calmly. Or, you go to work, you store your lunch and belongings in the dedicated space, and you keep the handlebar bag for your phone and papers.

Honestly, once you've used a scooter with real storage space, it's hard to go back to a basic model where you have to carry everything on you.

What is the real range under actual conditions?

Manufacturers always announce optimistic ranges. The iScooter DX5 is sold with a maximum range of 45 miles, or about 72 kilometers. Let's be realistic: these figures are calculated under perfect conditions with a very light rider, minimum speed, and a tailwind.

The battery is a 48V, 15.6 Ah pack housed in the lower frame. In terms of energy capacity, that's about 750 Wh, which is decent for a scooter in this price range.

In my real test, I covered a little over 6 miles, or about 10 kilometers, with a mix of speeds, brisk accelerations, off-road sections, and climbs. Upon arrival, the gauge showed three out of four bars, meaning more than 50% of the battery remained.

Extrapolating, I would say that with varied and dynamic use like mine, you can reasonably expect 20 to 25 kilometers of real-world range. If you ride more economically, using lower speed modes and avoiding abrupt accelerations, you might be able to reach 30 to 35 kilometers.

Reaching the advertised 72 kilometers? That would require truly ideal conditions: a rider weighing a maximum of 60 kg, constant 20 km/h riding in eco mode, on flat ground, without frequent stops. Technically possible, but not very representative of daily use.

That said, the real-world range I observed is more than sufficient for most urban commutes. If you do a 10-kilometer round trip to work, you can easily go several days without recharging, or at least do the round trip in a day without stress.

An important point to know: the supplied charger delivers 54.6V with a current of 2 amps. To fully charge a 15.6 Ah battery, you need to divide the capacity by the charger's current, which gives about 7.8 hours of charging from zero to 100%. This is long, so the ideal is to plug in the scooter overnight.

If you want to optimize the range, here's what really matters: your weight, your riding style, the terrain, and the temperature. Aggressive acceleration and repeated climbs are what drain the battery fastest. Speed modes, contrary to what you might think, don't really limit power at startup; they mostly limit the top speed. So if you want to save energy, it's not so much the mode that matters as how you use the accelerator.

Uphill and acceleration performance: How good is the 1500W motor?

The motor is a 1500W peak power direct-drive hub motor, powered by 48V. On paper, that's decent for a scooter of this size, but numbers don't tell the whole story. What matters is how it translates on the road.

From the first few meters, I was surprised by the lively acceleration. For a scooter sold at $699, the low-speed torque is really punchy. It's not at the level of an electric motorcycle, of course, but it's significantly more responsive than many entry-level scooters.

The speed modes, numbered 1 to 4, don't really change the starting torque, I was able to verify that. Whether you're in mode 1 or mode 4, the accelerator response is the same. What changes is the maximum allowed speed. In mode 1, you're limited to about 27 km/h. In mode 2, around 35 km/h. In mode 3, it goes up to 45 km/h. And in mode 4, you reach the top speed.

I did several top speed tests. On flat ground, in a normal sitting position, I reached 33 mph on my GPS, which is about 53 km/h. The screen displayed 35 mph, so there's a slight overestimation, but 53 km/h is still a very decent speed for a scooter in this category.

I also tried leaning forward to reduce wind resistance, in a "tuck" position like on a motorcycle. It didn't really change the top speed. The motor reaches its mechanical limit around 53 km/h with my weight of about 75 kg. Someone lighter might gain an additional 2-3 km/h.

For climbs, I tested on a slope of about 12%, a common medium hill found in the city. Result: the DX5 climbs without slowing down, maintaining good speed. I didn't need to help it by pushing with my feet like on some underpowered scooters. If your commutes include small to medium hills, you shouldn't have any problems.

However, I'm not under any illusions: on really steep slopes of 15-20%, the motor will struggle, especially if you're heavy or carrying gear. But for typical urban use, where slopes rarely exceed 10-12%, the motor does the job perfectly.

An interesting technical detail: opening the controller casing, I saw that it is configured for a nominal voltage of 48V with a maximum current of 30 amps. This means the actual peak power is 48V x 30A = 1440W, which is roughly equivalent to the advertised 1500W. And I also spotted the famous "orange wire," that wire which, on many motors, provides access to advanced settings or throttled performance. For tinkerers, this opens up optimization possibilities.

Hydraulic braking: reliable or needs improvement?

Brakes are a point that cannot be neglected on a vehicle capable of traveling at over 50 km/h. The DX5 is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes at the front and rear, with 3mm thick discs that resemble those found on pit bikes.

The brake calipers are massive and have a truly aggressive look. You immediately feel that they are not there for decoration. The hydraulic levers on the handlebar allow you to see the brake fluid level, which is both practical and aesthetic. The reservoir indicates that you can use DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid, which is standard and facilitates maintenance.

To test real effectiveness, I performed a standardized braking test. I accelerated to about 40 km/h, and as I passed a ground marker, I braked as hard as possible. The goal: to see how many parking spaces it took me to come to a complete stop.

Result: between 3 and 4 spaces, with the stop line just at the beginning of the fifth. To give you an idea, one to two spaces is almost impossible to achieve, three to four spaces is really good, four to five is within the acceptable average, and six or more means your brakes are dangerous.

The DX5 is therefore in the good range. The brakes are powerful and progressive, without being too aggressive to the point of sending you over the handlebars. You have good control over the dosage, which is important for braking smoothly in urban traffic or at traffic lights.

One point to note: when braking, the taillight illuminates more brightly, which is essential to signal to vehicles behind you that you are slowing down. This may seem basic, but some cheap models do not have this function.

What I particularly appreciate is the feeling of solidity and reliability. The calipers do not vibrate, there is no parasitic friction noise, and the lever travel is consistent. This inspires confidence, and that's exactly what you want when riding at 50 km/h in the city.

If you maintain the brakes correctly, regularly checking the fluid level and pad wear, you should have no problems. These are real hydraulic brakes, not disguised cable brakes, and that makes all the difference in terms of performance and longevity.

The screen and controls: practical for everyday use?

The scooter's display is probably one of the most unusual features of the DX5. It's a large screen that almost looks like a small tablet, mounted on the handlebars in a rather unique way. I had never seen this type of mounting before, and it seems quite proprietary.

To turn on the screen, you use an NFC card that you tap on it. A small tap, and the screen lights up. No button, no key, just the card. It's modern and practical, but it also means that if you lose the card, you might have a problem. Fortunately, it's large enough not to get lost easily in a pocket.

The screen displays essential information: battery level in bars, speed in miles per hour (or kilometers if you change the settings), current speed mode, and odometer. Everything is readable and well-organized.

The problem is visibility in direct sunlight. There's a quite pronounced reflection that makes it difficult to read when the sun hits the screen directly. It's not unreadable, but you have to squint or slightly change the angle of your head. And since the screen is fixed on a non-pivoting mount, you can't tilt it to reduce glare.

The handlebar controls are quite comprehensive. On the left side, you have a housing with several buttons: the headlight switch, left and right turn signals, and the horn. The turn signals emit a small beep when activated, which is very useful because you tend to forget to turn them off after a turn. The horn is quite powerful, enough to be heard in the city.

On the right, you have a full-twist throttle, which provides good control over the power delivered. It's more precise than a thumb throttle.

One detail worth mentioning: the alarm system. Every time you turn off the scooter with the NFC card, the alarm automatically activates. If someone moves the scooter, the alarm sounds and the rear motor locks, preventing it from being pushed. It's an interesting anti-theft security feature, even if it's not foolproof.

However, be careful: under the seat, there is a master switch that cuts off the power to the system. If someone knows this detail and switches off this switch, the alarm will no longer work. So it's not total protection, but it's better than nothing.

The wiring of the controls was not perfectly organized out of the box. The wires were a bit messy, and I had to use the provided cable ties to secure them neatly. It's a minor negative point regarding the finish, but it's not complicated to fix yourself in a few minutes.

Assembly and initial adjustments: what to expect?

The scooter arrives in a well-packaged box, with several sub-assemblies to put together. It's not delivered ready to ride, but assembly is not overly complex if you're a bit handy.

In the box, you'll find: the main frame with the rear motor already mounted, the front wheel placed in the storage basket (a surprising packaging choice), the seat, the mirrors, the screen, a tool kit, the user manual, the charger, a reflector, and the handlebar storage bag.

Assembly primarily involves attaching the handlebars, installing the front wheel, mounting the seat, screwing on the mirrors, and connecting the screen. The necessary tools are provided, which is a nice touch. It took me about 30 to 45 minutes to get everything set up, taking my time.

A few points of attention:

• Make sure all screws are tightened, especially on the handlebars and wheels. This is an essential safety step.

• The provided mirrors are really large, almost oversized. They offer good rear visibility, but they make the scooter quite wide. It's up to you whether you keep them or replace them with more compact models.

• Organize the cables during assembly. Use the provided cable sleeves to prevent wires from hanging or getting caught in moving parts.

• Before first use, fully charge the battery. Even if it arrives with a partial charge, a full charge cycle is recommended to calibrate the system.

Once assembled, the DX5 really looks like a mini-scooter rather than a kick scooter. The aesthetics are neat, with touches of red on the brake calipers and shock absorbers that give it a sporty look. It doesn't look like a classic scooter that you fold up and store in a corner at all.

Speaking of which: the DX5 is not foldable. It's a fixed vehicle, designed to be parked like a scooter. If you're looking for a compact scooter that you can take on a bus or store under your desk, this is not the right choice. But if you have a parking space, whether it's a garage, a basement, or a bike parking area, then it's not a problem at all.

The total weight is about 35-40 kg, which is substantial. You won't be carrying this scooter up stairs every day. But this weight also contributes to the stability and overall solidity.

Who should really consider the iScooter DX5?

After testing this scooter in various conditions, I have a pretty clear idea of the user profile for whom it's ideal, and for whom it wouldn't be suitable.

The DX5 is perfect for you if:

• You are between 1.60m and 1.80m tall, a height range where the seat ergonomics work perfectly

• You have a place to park the scooter without having to carry it up stairs

However, the DX5 may not be for you if:
