Can you really replace your car with an all-terrain electric scooter for everyday use?

 

I always thought electric scooters were just gadgets for short urban trips. But recently, when my car was in the garage for a whole week, I decided to take on a challenge: to use an all-terrain electric scooter exclusively for all my daily travels. Shopping, meeting friends, going to work, managing my appointments... Everything I would normally do by car.

This experience opened my eyes to a reality that many still ignore: with the right conditions and the right equipment, a high-performance electric scooter can truly transform your daily mobility. But beware, it's not as simple as it seems, and there are practical aspects that nobody really talks about.

Let me tell you what I learned during this intensive week, the obstacles I encountered, and above all, help you understand if this type of vehicle could suit your own situation.

First outing: meeting friends for coffee

The first test seemed simple: going to a cafe about 6 kilometers from my home. Nothing too complicated, I thought. Yet, from the very first minutes, I realized how much the riding experience differs completely from what one imagines.

Surprising stability even at high speeds

What struck me most was the feeling of stability. Halfway there, I glanced at the screen and realized I was going 65 km/h without even noticing. The sensation was that of a much more moderate speed, around 40 km/h. This stability largely comes from the high fork and the width of the deck, which provide a very balanced center of gravity.

For someone new to this type of machine, it's reassuring. You don't constantly feel like you're struggling to maintain balance as on some low-end scooters. Even on small road imperfections, the behavior remains predictable.

Different riding modes: a real practical asset

Most all-terrain electric scooters offer several riding modes, and that's where part of their versatility lies:

• Walk mode, useful when you need to push the machine without carrying its full weight • Eco mode, capped at around 25 km/h, perfect for pedestrian or cycling areas • Sport mode, which goes up to about 50 km/h • Race mode, which unleashes full power

What's clever is that each mode not only adapts the maximum speed, but also the responsiveness of the acceleration. In eco mode, acceleration is progressive and smooth, ideal when riding near pedestrians or cyclists. In race mode, the acceleration is explosive, comparable to that of a 125 cc thermal scooter.

The challenge of secure parking

Arriving at the cafe, I was confronted with my first real problem: how to secure my scooter? Unlike a car that you simply lock, a machine of this type can theoretically be lifted and carried away by two determined people.

I adopted a three-level security strategy:

First, physical locking. I used a sturdy U-lock, passing it through the metal rail located at the front of the deck. This is the most reliable method, similar to what you would do with a high-end electric bicycle. Avoid plastic parts, as they can be cut more easily.

Then, digital locking. Most modern scooters offer an electronic locking system via a mobile application. Some even offer automatic unlocking by phone proximity, which avoids having to enter a code every time.

Finally, the integrated GPS tracker. This is a feature I discovered in the app: some models can connect to Apple's "Find My" network, working exactly like an AirTag. If someone steals your scooter, you can track its movements in real-time as long as there are iPhones nearby, which is almost always the case in urban areas.

This multi-layered approach does not make theft impossible, but it makes it sufficiently complicated to deter opportunistic thieves. For stops of less than 5 minutes, digital locking alone may suffice. For longer durations, physical anti-theft becomes essential.

The shopping test: where it gets complicated

While going for coffee was relatively simple, grocery shopping proved to be a challenge of a completely different nature. This is also where many people realize the practical limitations of a scooter as a primary vehicle.

The mistake I made (and you can avoid)

My first mistake was arriving at the supermarket without a reusable bag. I naively thought I could hang the shopping bags on the small hook near the handlebars. Problem: the store only used paper bags without sturdy handles.

The result? Impossible to hang anything securely. I tried to place a bag between my feet on the deck, but it was frankly dangerous, especially for riding on a busy road. I finally had to call my wife to pick up the groceries by car. Not exactly the autonomy I was looking for.

Solutions that really work

After this failure, I identified what actually works for carrying things:

The backpack remains the most reliable method for light to medium shopping. You can easily carry the equivalent of 3 to 4 days' worth of groceries for one person, or even two. This is exactly what I did in college when I used to travel by moped.

Reusable bags with sturdy handles are essential. Hung on the handlebars via the dedicated hook, they remain relatively stable during the journey, provided they are not overloaded. A weight of 5 to 7 kg maximum per bag is reasonable.

Some more experienced users install a front basket or a small box attached to the deck. I haven't tested this option, but it seems interesting for regular and limited shopping.

Load capacity: a point not to be overlooked

Most all-terrain electric scooters support a total load of about 150 kg. If you weigh 75 kg, you theoretically have 75 kg of margin to carry things. In practice, this is sufficient for light weekly shopping, but clearly insufficient for a complete family supply.

What's interesting is that the power deploys continuously. Unlike my old moped which struggled and eventually stalled on some hills, a modern all-terrain electric scooter maintains its constant torque. This is one of the big advantages of electric motorization.

However, the boost function only lasts a few seconds before needing to recharge. On the screen, you see a bar that empties and then gradually fills up. For medium slopes, classic sport mode is amply sufficient. Boost is really useful for quick starts or particularly steep hills.

The importance of the braking system

What is often forgotten is that after the climb comes the descent. And descending a steep slope at 40 or 50 km/h requires a serious braking system.

Hydraulic disc brakes are really the minimum requirement for this type of use. I tested the brakes several times in different conditions, and the responsiveness is excellent. The two independent brakes (front and rear) allow for precise modulation.

One feature I would have appreciated: a dedicated regenerative brake, thumb-activated. Several competing scooters in this price range offer it. This system recovers energy while descending hills and braking gradually, which preserves your mechanical brakes and slightly increases range. It's a detail, but one that makes a difference on long, hilly rides.

Equipment and features that change everything

After several days of intensive use, some design details have evolved from "nice gadget" to "truly indispensable."

The smart screen: much more than a speedometer

The 2.4-inch color TFT screen has become my best ally. At first, I thought it was just an improved speedometer. In reality, it's a real on-board computer.

The integrated GPS navigation displays your directions directly on the screen, without needing to mount your phone on the handlebars (which is frankly dangerous). When a turn approaches, a red bar gradually fills up to indicate the remaining distance. At 150 meters, the bar is half full. At 50 meters, it's almost complete. It's intuitive and keeps you focused on the road.

The screen also intelligently adapts depending on the riding mode. In eco mode, the remaining range is displayed prominently, as this is the relevant information when you are trying to save battery. In race mode, speed takes up the entire screen, with range moving to the background.

Incoming calls are also displayed, allowing you to decide whether you need to stop to answer or not, without taking your phone out of your pocket.

Lighting: a vital safety issue

Riding at night completely changes the game. I waited until dark to really test the lighting system, and this is something you absolutely must not neglect.

The front light offers two intensities: low beam and high beam. The difference is significant. The low beam illuminates up to about 35 meters in front of you, sufficient for careful urban driving. The high beam extends up to about 75 meters, essential on poorly lit rural roads.

There is also an automatic mode that detects ambient light and adjusts the lighting accordingly. Practical when you go under a tunnel or into a shaded area.

The turn signals are accompanied by a continuous audible signal (a repetitive beep), which can be slightly annoying but ensures you won't forget to turn them off. You deactivate them by pushing the joystick in the same direction.

The taillight is sufficiently visible, even in broad daylight. I asked a friend to follow me by car to check, and he confirmed that he could see me clearly from over 100 meters away.

The horn and the bell: two complementary tools

A detail that may seem anecdotal but proved crucial: having both a bell and a horn.

The bell is perfect for politely warning pedestrians or cyclists that you are going to overtake them. It's a gentle, non-aggressive chime that doesn't startle anyone.

The horn, on the other hand, sounds like a car horn. Loud, impactful, it is used in emergency situations, for example when a vehicle hasn't seen you and starts to cut into your path. I used it twice during the week, and both times, it probably saved me from an accident.

On older models, there was often only one very weak signal. This improvement is therefore truly welcome.

The mobile application: the hidden control center

I didn't expect to attach so much importance to the mobile application, but it has become a daily tool to optimize my journeys.

Real-time data

The application displays your real-time speed, remaining range, battery and motor temperatures, as well as total mileage. This data helps you better understand your energy consumption.

For example, I noticed that riding at 45 km/h instead of 50 km/h increased my range by about 15%. On a 30 km journey, that can make the difference between reaching your destination or having to push the last 2 kilometers.

Advanced mode customization

In the advanced settings, you can completely redefine the riding modes. Do you find sport mode too fast for your daily use? You can limit it to 35 km/h instead of 50 km/h. Do you want to completely disable race mode to avoid any temptation? It's possible with a single click.

You can also adjust sound effects (beeps when starting, changing modes, etc.) and even program an automatic shutdown after a certain period of inactivity to save battery.
